Revisions to the Koral Chowk- Motorway Chowk Signal-free Corridor Plan
The Punjab government has given the green signal to a Revisions to the Koral Chowk- Motorway Chowk signal-free corridor plan in Rawalpindi. This corridor, spanning 22 kilometers, aims to reduce travel congestion between the Islamabad International Airport (IIA) and the motorway. It will also be providing a more efficient transportation route. The revised plan incorporates several important changes to enhance connectivity and alleviate congestion in the area.
Key Features of the Revised Plan:
Modified Starting Point: The corridor will now commence from Ammar Chowk instead of Koral Chowk. This adjustment aims to optimize traffic flow and streamline the journey for commuters.
Construction of Underpasses: Underpasses will be constructed at strategic locations along the Mall, including in front of prominent landmarks such as the Pearl Continental Hotel, General Headquarters (GHQ) Chowk, General Post Office Chowk, and Military Hospital Chowk.
Flyover Construction: A flyover will be built between Ammar Chowk and Qasim Market, further improving the efficiency of the signal-free corridor. This addition will facilitate smoother traffic flow and reduce travel time for commuters and job holders.
Liaquat Bagh Chowk Development: The Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) is contemplating transforming Liaquat Bagh Chowk into a signal-free junction by constructing an underpass on Murree Road in front of Liaquat Bagh. This potential addition will contribute to the overall efficiency of the corridor and enhance traffic management in the area.
Project Funding and Timeline:
The provincial government has allocated PKR 8 billion for the implementation of this project. These funds will be release after the completion of the feasibility study. The RDA has already conducted a thorough survey of the area and finalized the initial plan. The feasibility study is schedule to take place in July 2023.
